Our two newest arrivals, Lakota and Apache, arrived at the Sanctuary in June of 2010 from Howling Acres Wolf Sanctuary in Oregon. The founders of Howling Acres took great care of the wolves in their charge. However, due to personal circumstances, the providers had to close the sanctuary. 

Taking great care to relocate the wolves to other licensed facilities, Lakota and Apache were the last to relocate to our sanctuary in Texas. They had quite an adventure traveling to their new home. Under guidance of the U.S.D.A., both wolves were sedated and double crated for safety and protection. They were flown by commercial airline to Houston and picked up by a couple of our volunteers. All of us are excited about our new friends who are adjusting nicely to their new home.

History provided by Howling Acres revealed both wolves are approximately 11 years old. They arrived as part of the Fairfield Four in 2001. The Fairfield Four were four wolves purchased in Alaska by a family in Fairfield County, California. The owner kept the wolves illegally in a residential area. California’s Animal Control seized the wolves after they escaped their enclosure.

Following a seven week court battle over possession of the wolves, the court awarded possession of the wolves to Howling Acres Wolf Sanctuary. While in the care of the Animal Control, the wolves were kept separately. While separated, the wolves lost weight and grew depressed. Upon arrival at Howling Acres, the wolves were reunited and made quite the public stir when the “family” reunion occurred. The Fairfield Four lived quite happily together until the relocation of the wolves to other sanctuaries.
